Venice / Route 04 / Water & architecture

The Lido: from the landing to the Adriatic

A vaporetto brings you to the lagoon shore. Gran Viale takes you across the island, past the architecture of Venice’s seaside resort, towards the beach.

0.8 km on foot · 3 stops · Boat to start

After the historic centre, the Lido takes a moment to get used to: there are cars, buses, gardens and a broad avenue running towards the sea. This route follows Gran Viale Santa Maria Elisabetta from the boat landing to the lungomare.

The distance is short enough to walk directly, but look above the shops as you go. The island’s years as a fashionable seaside resort left some conspicuous architecture along the way.

Take the vaporetto to Lido S.M.E.

From San Marco–San Zaccaria, check line 5.1 towards Lido. Line 1 also serves the Lido and is an option for travelling along the Grand Canal from the station or Rialto. Confirm the destination and departure berth on the current display.

The walking map begins after you disembark. A boat journey is not included in the GPX track.

ACTV · Getting to the Lido

Before you set off

Unlike the historic centre, the Lido has road traffic. Use crossings. The mapped walk finishes at the seafront; beach entrances and facilities depend on the establishment and season.

Your pace, your stops

We don’t give walking times: everyone moves through a city at a different pace. A route is a suggestion that links places worth seeing. You decide where to stop and what you can take on today.

Santa Maria Elisabetta

Get off at Lido S.M.E., the abbreviation used for Santa Maria Elisabetta. Before walking away, identify the return landing information so that the journey back feels familiar.

Turn towards Gran Viale Santa Maria Elisabetta. The sea is across the island; the water beside your arrival point is the lagoon. Keeping that distinction in mind makes the short crossing easier to read.

Next on footUse the pedestrian crossings to join Gran Viale and follow it towards the seafront.

Gran Viale

Along Gran Viale, look for the Ausonia Hungaria. Opened in 1907, the hotel has a facade covered in decorated majolica. You can study it from the public street; there is no need to be a guest or to go inside.

It belongs to the Lido’s development as a fashionable resort. Villas and hotels adopted a mixture of styles, including Liberty, the Italian form of Art Nouveau. Gardens, ornament and the space between buildings set this part of Venice apart from the streets around Rialto.

Next on footThe numbered point marks the avenue segment, not a hotel entrance. Continue along Gran Viale to its seaward end.

The Adriatic edge

At the end of Gran Viale you reach the lungomare, on the Adriatic side of the island. The walking track stops here. Getting onto the sand is a separate matter: use a signed public entrance or check the conditions at a beach establishment.

Beach facilities operate seasonally, so a place that is busy in summer may be closed outside the bathing season. If you are returning to central Venice, retrace the avenue to Santa Maria Elisabetta and check the destination of your boat before boarding.

End of the routeThe route ends at the lungomare. Retrace Gran Viale to Lido S.M.E. for the return boat, checking its destination before boarding.
